0. Search Overview

  1. Multiple keywords can be inputted when separated with a space. In order to view the search results efficiently, it will help to include all appropriate keywords.
  2. Please do not publish search results from this catalogue without permission.
  3. Classifications are included to provide a ready reference for the use of The Synthetic Catalogue of Japanese Classics (日本古典籍総合目録). Some classifications are not for that purpose.
  4. From "Keyword(s)", it is possible to search The Synthetic Catalogue of Japanese Classics via "著作ＩＤ". Please use the 'Alternative Title' search function.
  5. The Nihon Jurin Sōsho is separated into a total of four periods. However, results are displayed consecutively. Please see the following table for usage instructions.

1. How to Perform a Search in the Search Screen

  1. Enter a search keyword relevant to the topic you wish to search for.
  2. If you wish to search using 'Keyword(s)', 'Year of publication' or 'Author', please enter keyword(s) in these fields. Words and phrases can be separated with spaces and the search may also be modified with AND. Furthermore, it is possible to search the 'Year of Publication' field using era names (the names attributed to Japanese imperial reigns) alone (without stating the year of that era). Please be aware that the year of publication is unclear in some cases.
  3. To search by 'Author name', 'Classification', 'Form of the material', and set 'No. of results per page', please choose these from the menu.
  4. Set the number of results per page.
  5. Click the button marked 'search'. To clear your search criteria and start again, click the 'reset' button.

2. 'Keyword(s)' search headings:

  1. 'Year of publication', 'Author', 'Classification' and 'Form of the material' may all be included as search headings.
  2. Boolean search (using Boolean logic/operators) instructions are as follows:
    • 'AND', when placed between two words in the search field will generate search hits in which the two words appear together.
    • 'OR', when placed between two words in the search field will generate search hits in which either of the two words appear.
    • 'NOT', when placed between two words in the search field will generate search hits in which the second word does not appear

3. The Search Screen

  1. On the search screen there are menus presenting the 'Keyword(s)', 'Year of publication' or 'Author' 'Title', 'Classification' and 'Form of the material' fields. With 'Keyword(s)', any of the other search headings can be applied as search criteria, in addition to the search via the main field input.
  2. Search keyword settings: Input the search title keyword in the search title keyword field.
  3. To carry out a search, input a search keyword and click the 'Search' button.
  4. Search Results/Hits: On the search results list the number of hits shown can be adjusted using the corresponding pull-down menu.

4. Search Results Screen

  1. If there are more hits than the number of results you have specified per page, please navigate through the results pages by clicking on the link in the bottom left of the screen.
  2. You can return to the search screen using the 'Return to search screen' link.
  3. The results are given as non-punctuated texts. To read results as punctuated text (in which katakana wabun material is shown as hiragana) or see the original photocopies, please press or buttons. Another window will open to show this material.

昔孟子論孔子曰自有生民未有孔子也又引宰我曰以予観於夫子賢於尭舜遠矣子貢曰自生民以来未有夫子也有若曰自生民以来未有盛於孔子也見謂宰我子貢有若智足以知聖人汙不至阿其所好是孟子之所以為千古之独見而漢儒以来所以不能窺其藩閫也於乎盛哉伊川云語聖則不異事功則有異夫子賢於尭舜語事功也愚謂孟子未嘗曰事功賢於尭舜其以事功言者蓋臆説陽明以万鎰黄金譬尭舜千鎰黄金譬孔子亦非也蓋尭舜天子而在乎位孔子棲棲一旅人耳其名位夐殊宜乎人為此不若彼也陽明雖高談良知実不免為俗見也或謂中庸曰祖述尭舜憲章文武若孔子之徳果賢於尭舜則当自我作古奚竢尭舜而祖述哉是不然身坐堂上而能弁堂下人之曲直其祖述之者祖述其所当祖述其憲章之者憲章其所当憲章皆自祖述憲章之也宓犧神農黄帝之書謂之三墳言大道也少昊顓頊帝嚳之書謂之五典言常道也皆上古神聖継天立極然而夫子定特断自尭舜而雖上三皇五帝之書猶在所黜焉則夫子之道高出万古超跨群聖猶日月懸天而万物自明於是天地之道明人倫之法定民無所惑焉夫子以前猶無柁之船至其所至夫子以後若船之有柁有所嚮方自無所迷所謂万世永頼者独夫子之謂歟是蓋有道有徳而有斯事功其独以事功言者鄙哉学者知夫子之所以為夫子而可識其道之大矣識斯道之大而後愈可知夫子之所以為夫子也徒作言論者非也
