Navigating the Boundaries of Ellipsis Mismatch: When Being Slightly out of Sync Is Just about Right

概要
This presentation examines ellipsis constructions involving sluicing, VP-ellipsis, argument ellipsis, tautological conditionals, and the so-called MaxElide effects. The investigation reveals a striking asymmetry: in ellipsis constructions governed by syntactic identity, the actual size of the PF-elided site is larger than the syntactic domain required to satisfy that identity condition. Conversely, in ellipsis constructions authorized by semantic identity, the PF-elided site is smaller than the syntactic domain over which semantic identity is computed.

Based on these observations on domain size mismatch, I develop a Mismatch Theory of Ellipsis, which posits that the domain of identity calculation and the actual PF-elided domain are fundamentally misaligned in natural language computation. Furthermore, I also briefly address the fundamental question of why the phonological externalization component and the semantic computation component exhibit this systematic misalignment, exploring an explanation rooted in a certain version of the interface model within the Minimalist Program
